Photographs of Yangon Burma

After our escapades in Inle Lake, and nearly a week of traveling together, Cam, Sarah, and I parted ways. I was heading South to Yangon, my last stop on my four month trip.

Before Yangon, I wanted to get a bus to go to Bago, a small little town on the way to Yangon. I planned to stop there for just 2 nights and explore the town…but the universe had other plans for me. I fell into a deep sleep on my 10 hour night bus, and when I arrived, I thought I was in Bago, but I was in Yangon.

The funny thing is, is I had no idea until many hours later. I got a taxi to take me to my guesthouse, which was called San Fransisco Inn, recommended by Lonely Planet. But when I arrived at San Fransisco Inn, it was one of the seediest rooms I stayed in on my entire trip. OMG! it wasn’t until I was already settled into this place that I suddenly realized I was in Yangon, and not Bago… there just so happened to be a place with the same name in both cities!

I quickly moved to a new place, Toyko Guesthouse. Though probably the smallest room I’ve ever slept in, I liked guesthouse and it had a nice common area for doing work. But it was hot. Really really hot.

As I was shooting around the city, I focused on some on-going themes I’ve developed over the last 3 years: napping and reading. In Burma, a place so historically isolated and cut from the world, i wanted to focus on themes that were simple and universal.

The highlight of yangon without a doubt is the Shwedagon Pagoda. It cannot be missed. I recommend going bright and early in the morning before, before 8 am, when it’s not too hot and the light is beautiful.
