six months ago, i got a an email from the curator for the natural museum of history in providence, rhode island. jazz’s partner kira had recommended me for an upcoming exhibition on african culture and subsequently, all eight of the photos i submitted were accepted into the exhibit.
this (my first museum exhibit) is semi-permanent collection of photos taken in the dogon region of mali, west africa where i spent three days hiking. the exhibit features natural objects from the region alongside of the photos, giving it much more context and history than would a normal gallery showing.
dogon is one of the most fascinating places i’ve seen. the most striking images in are the villages perched along the escarpment that were created in response to the spread of Islam. to avoid intrusion, the dogon people built their villages into cliff faces. they are also renowned for their knowledge of the stars and planetary system.
if you are in the new england area, check out this neat display. i am selling a limited edition of prints from this collection on my website.
