Same-Sex Wedding in Bar Harbor Maine

Dana is a dear friend of mine from college (Simmons in Boston, to be exact,) so I was overjoyed when she asked me to do her wedding. Bar Harbor is a beautiful little island off the cost of Maine, and it’s a special place to Dana and Cassie because they spent the first 4 months of their relationship living there. As Dana put it, “we associate this area in Maine with falling in love and growing together.”

Dana and Cassie both worked on the 2009 Marriage Equality Campaign in Maine, which was ultimately unsuccessful, but paved the way for the 2012 victory. They planned the wedding in Bar Harbor two years before it was legal. Dana told me, “If it didn’t pass, we would have gotten legally hitched in my home state (NY) or Massachusetts, where we live. It worked out perfectly though…and it’s surreal and special to being among the first wave of legal same-sex marriages in Maine.”

Among the attendees, was Cassie’s 91-year-old great grandmother, who sported an awesome blue leisure suit for the big day, and helped sew the napkin rings. When they told me she would be there, I couldn’t resist asking, “Does she know it’s a gay wedding?” The joke of course was, “we think so.” It was a rainy day, but a beautiful day…the rain, mist, and fog created a classic New England backdrop, and I couldn’t have been more happy to be there as a photographer and as a friend.  I’ll leave you with a note Cassie posted on her facebook page after the wedding:

“I am completely awe struck and in an emotional fog with the overwhelming support, love, and kindness I felt not only that day but also all the days surrounding. As I scramble to recount every moment, to preserve it and bottle it up, one image that will never fade is standing next to my newly declared wife with nearly 200 beautiful faces looking back on us with hope, love, and united support.”

To my lovely sister and sister in law,
Thank you for choosing me to stand by your side during this amazing day. Words cannot express how beautiful you both looked. Not only was the ceremony elegant, the reception was crazy, and I don’t think anyone could complain of not dancing enough. I love you both and look forward to watching you start a family.
    Love for eternity,
