Last year, after doing a deep dive into best SEO practices for wedding photographers (and spending a lot of time expanding my SEO knowledge), I decided on a whim to re-design my entire website just one week before leaving for my annual winter season in Thailand. At the time, it felt like a crazy decision, and I knew I had exactly one week to do it, because once I arrive in Thailand, I often find myself allergic to my computer.

Switching my website hosting to Cloudways and my WordPress theme to Kadence has a been a big item on my to-do list for about a year. My dedication to improving my website and my organic google rankings came after a couple of slow business years which led me to a career identity crisis of sorts. I was based primarily in NYC, a highly competitive city for every industry, but was traveling more and marketing in two other areas, which made SEO and booking clients even more complicated.

Nearly one year later, I can safely say that switching my hosting to Cloudways and Kadence is the best decision I made for my business all year. I have to give a huge shout out to Dylan Howell and Corey’s FB group and website Fuel your Photos for instigating this website overhaul decision. The FB group is packed with free information, generous advice from Dylan and Corey daily, and functions both as a learning ground and Q&A for all things SEO related. I am in no way affiliated with or receive any money for promoting any of these things – I am just one of many who have followed the advice given in the group, and as a result, my website has never been faster, ranked higher on google, or gotten as many leads as it currently does. I haven’t even taken one of Dylan or Corey’s paid courses; I took advantage of all the free information offered in the FB group and implemented it on my own.

My google speed ranking went from a D to an A after I switched my hosting and theme, and my keyword phrases started to consistently rank higher over the coming months. I tracked my keyword phrases through the SEO edge – the best free SEO tool out there (besides Google Console). My bookings started to increase again. I started ranking for keyword phrases I had never even ranked for before (such as NYC corporate photographer). Most importantly, I felt caught up with the times – after 13 years in the industry, I realized how important it was to “keep up” so that I (and my business) didn’t get left behind.

This week, the highly popular wordpress theme company dedicated to photographers, Flothemes, announced that it will no longer be supported after 2024 which have left many photographers in a scramble. For photographers out there reading this stressed by this news, I highly encourage you to use it as an opportunity to elevate your website and your business to the next level. Whether you are designing your website on your own or hiring someone else to do it, I can’t recommend the Cloudways Kadence combo enough. This theme has so much flexibility; there are endless design options, and if you so choose, your website can look completely different from any given photographer, even while using the same theme.
